What may be happening right now
A home is only one piece of independence. There is a life to run from it.
Someone may live alone, rent privately, own their home, live with a partner or housemates, or live in SIL, SDA or another supported arrangement. The amount of support needed can look completely different. The common point is simple: it is their home and their life.
What Crew support can actually look like
We do not just want to help someone live in a home. We want to help them have a life from it.
Support should fit the person, their household and their idea of a good life. It can be practical, it can build skills where that makes sense, and it should never make a person’s world smaller.
Building skills where it makes sense
Independence is not refusing help. It is having as much control as possible over your own life.
- Cooking all or part of a meal
- Making choices about routines and the household
- Taking on tasks at a pace that feels achievable
Having a life outside the house
A good week should not be wake up, shift, dinner, bed, repeat.
